PR: Construction of the RUNE optical network has begun in Gorenjska

Ljubljana, 17. 4. 2024 – The installation of an active acces node that will provide optical signals to users in the settlement of Zgornje Gorje in the Municipality of Gorje announced the start of construction of the RUNE broadband optical network in the Gorenjska region. The network will provide access to a higher quality, faster and more reliable internet connection to many residents of Gorenjska who have not had this option until now. The RUNE project, which is led in Slovenia by the company RUNE Enia d.o.o., connects rural areas of Slovenia with optical infrastructure.

In April, the construction of a broadband optical network as part of the RUNE project also began in the Gorenjska region, namely in the Municipality of Gorje. The municipality is part of a project with internal naming S14a, which also includes parts of the municipalities of Bled, Radovljica and Jesenice. The active access node for providing optical signals to users is located in the settlement of Zgornje Gorje, from where the construction of the network routes will also begin in the coming weeks. It will begin in the settlements of Spodnje and Zgornje Gorje, then run towards the settlements of Spodnje and Zgornje Laze, Krnica and Zatrnik, and then continue to other parts of the municipality and also to other municipalities included in the aforementioned project. The first users will be connected to the network during the course of this summer. It is expected that in the Municipality of Gorje we will be able to cover 926 addresses with the optical network, and 4692 within the entire S14a project.

“The new network will provide users with access to a faster, more reliable and higher-quality internet connection, which will also improve the quality of living, education and work in rural areas. A high-quality network will certainly also contribute to the development of tourism, agriculture and the entire economy in the Gorenjska region,” said Stojan Nikolić, director of RUNE Enia d. o. o.

Peter Torkar, Mayor of the Municipality of Gorje, added: “A high-quality optical network will primarily provide our citizens with a reliable internet connection and fast data transfer. We all know that the internet is a part of our lives today, so progress is inevitable. We use it for work, learning and of course also for entertainment, such as playing games or listening to music, so it is right that we have joined the project and provided a broadband optical network to all settlements in the local community of Gorje.”

To speed up the work, the construction of the network between settlements (the so-called primary network) and the network to users and user connections (the so-called secondary network) will be carried out almost simultaneously. The work in this area is expected to be completed next year, while the construction of user connections will last a little longer.

The inclusion of an address in the RUNE project can be checked on the website www.ruralnetwork.eu, where, simultaneously with the construction of the infrastructure, the connector can also be ordered. The cost of connecting to an optical connection according to the currently valid price list is EUR 250,00 (VAT included) for individuals or EUR 278,54 (VAT included) for legal entities, and at the request of the subscriber, this amount can be covered by the selected service provider. Users also have the option of choosing between all the largest operators in Slovenia.

About the project

The RUNE project in Slovenia is implemented by the company RUNE Enia d.o.o. RUNE is the first and at the moment also the only cross-border project at the EU level, which connects the territories of several member states with ultra-fast broadband optical infrastructure, which received funds from the private Connecting Europe Broadband Fund (CEBF). The latter is the majority owner of Rune Group S.A., which owns the companies RUNE Enia (Slovenia) and RUNE Crow (Croatia).

In early December 2019, the RUNE project was awarded the EU Broadband Award by the European Commission as the best project in the category.
